Sit still. Eyes closed. Take in a deep breath and release it.
What is your mission?
To retrieve lost time with your family?
To win back the affection of a lover?
To compete in a cutthroat market?
To scour the internet for the most accurate information?
Whatever your mission, here are 10 questions to ask yourself on your journey.
“Some will reach their goal; few will reach the unseen goal; none will reach a goal that has no name.”
What is my mission? - name your quest. Without a name, it has no significance in your mind and your mind must agree to its importance.
What is one thing complicating this mission? A monkey-wrench in the system? Or is it a self-sabotaging hang-up?
What do I need to dump? Sometimes we have extra cargo that needs to go. We’ve been carrying it for too long and this quest is just highlighting it’s overdo nature.
Where does this mission occur? As the realtors say, “location, location, location.” Once I had a patient whose wounds were not healing, despite our daily treatments. I told her if she could just lay on the opposite side of the bed, the treatment would work. She denied the ability, saying it was too hard to lay on her left side. Eventually, she had to move rooms due to insurance reasons. Would you know that in this new room, the window faced her left side? Suddenly, she could lay on the left side and within 2 weeks, her wounds healed. The location always matters.
Who helps (or hinders) this mission? Who are the key players in this drama?
What do I need to calibrate? Sometimes, the simplest adjustment makes the greatest difference, a lot like flipping a light switch. Maybe you don’t need to change everything - just one small thing. Don’t be surprised if the cheapest, and simplest option completes the mission.
What stands in my way? There is always an obstacle. They can be neutral like the mountain pass or hostile like an army in your path. Either way, identify the challenge that opposes you helps you complete the mission - even if the obstacle is within.
What is on the horizon? Ah, yes, keep your eyes on the great beyond, for that is what you seek. Losing track of the goal in the midst of the struggle makes for a weary sojourner.
How can I care for myself? Just because you make this arduous journey does not mean that you must suffer along the way. Treat yourself when the time is right to the deliciousness of life. Discover how your desires change along the way - the needs for your soul may emerge only after you struggle uphill. For it is movement that creates hunger.
What distracts me? The insidious villain is not the obvious one. Sometimes this is a well-meaning friend, or an ongoing need, or the mind numbing effects of pleasure. Distraction is a greater devil than opposition.
Sojourn on! Journal daily to refine your soul and keep your motivations up front before you. May your story continue.
