To sojourn - from sub & dyeu
"Under the sun"
Sub is easy, submarine, submit, subterranean, it all means under. I love prepositions because they reveal to us where and when something occurs. They show us time and space. I heard that the French took the word “sub” and wrote it “sou”, as in subscribe - souscrire, and also souvenir.
Dyeu
broken from diurnum or the word “day”.
So what does that mean? Looking up the etymology, it means sun, day, or shining thing in the sky. You can easily see this is where we obtained our word “day”. But then I think of other words like
adieu, adios, deo, deity…
The shining one - God.
And from all that, because I love reading on how words came to be as they are:
A sojourner is one who spends a day under the sun.
since the word dyeu strongly resembles "deo"
A sojourner is one who spends their time under the sunlight, under God. Eventually, we understand that to be a sojourner, is to realize our existence here under the sun, is a temporary one. And therefore, we stay lightweight, low maintenance and always, with a staff in hand.
Eternity is bound up in our hearts. We know this is not the only life, but there is also eternal life that springs up from within. Like the sun in the sky, we can walk underneath it, submitting to its force in our life and walk.
So, for this reason, only because the word gives me the shivers every time I say it.
No matter how you sojourn, as always, may your story continue.
