When playing tabletop roleplaying games, the imagination is the limit - until it is time to roll the dice. The dice decide whether you live or die.
In this case, Ben leaned over the table and squinted at the number face up on the dice. Everyone else at the table stayed silent. Then he answered with an outburst, “I died!”
TTRPGs teach us the thrill of adventure comes with a cost - and that cost is safety and comfort. At least in the game, you sleep in the wilds, you keep watch in dungeons, and you face off against demons from the abyss. At least you are not alone, for a group of adventures travel with you as you seek your reward.
But Ben doesn’t understand that failure is a part of the game - in truth, that is why we keep coming back - because of the risk of failure surrounding the promise of reward. But more importantly, adventure is the energy that moves our blood and reminds us that we are alive.
In the name of comfort and safety, sometimes we give up on our adventures. There is a time and place for everything “under the sun” and everyone sojourner knows this because a sojourner is “one who walks a day’s journey under the sun”.
There is a time for comfort and a time for adventure.
There is a time for safety and a time for risk.
Wisdom shows us when is the right time for both.
If you feel exhausted, malaise, or boredom, you may need to step into risk and adventure.
If you feel burnt out, frazzled and frustrated, you may need to step into comfort and safety.
Either way - do not give up on your adventure, whether it is time to rest or work, risk or reward, joy or sorrow. Life requires both.
May your story continue!
