Sojourners Awake Podcast has grown.
Growth is good, right?
What fun would it be in a game where you never leveled up or gathered magic items? What fun would it be if you never … changed?
Well, change is hard - but I think that is because we get attached to our current situation rather than seeing life as a game to play.
When I was fired from my corporate position after the sales marketing team conspired against me (2018 was not my year), I started playing Dungeons and Dragons with my kids. I quickly learned how playing games while telling a story shifted my mindset on life. No longer was I getting attached to my own story, but I realized that I had to level up my self in order to actually play the real game of life.
Otherwise, I die a miserable old man, long dead before my last breath.
So, in 2024, I let go of my position as podcast host for Tabletop Stories. I so wish that I could say this was not painful, but to be honest, an egotistical part of me, the part that is attached to my own success, screamed in pain as I let this go.
But something else that playing games has taught me - always look for the reward after a good fight. Because many times, we fight, and forget to search for the reward.
Jackson is doing an amazing job stepping up and leading. He has created a homebrewed world, designed a clever adventure and hosts with the warmth of any seasoned game master. I’m proud.
Maybe firing myself was the best decision I ever made.
So, go through your life. You are holding on to something too tightly as it tries to free itself from your control. There was a time and place it needed your care, but now, because OF your care, it has outgrown your grasp. Re-Lease it to the Wild and expect a Re-Turn.
It’s a principle of life. Obey it today.
