I discovered this delight by accident (there are no accidents).
While reviewing one of my old journals, I noticed that I had left a few blank pages. I looked over at the next page to see it was dated a couple months ago. Instead of leaving it blank, or filling it with something new, I riffed off of that old entry updating it with a fresh perspective and new thoughts. This technique is like sending yourself a message in a bottle, so natural in its creation, that it had to be a technique worth keeping.
When you journal, simply leave the left page blank, and fill the right page up with your usual entries, such as:
Task List for the Week
Unwanted Feelings you can say out loud
Frameworks for Solving Problems
Prayer Request for the Day
A reminder to your future self - something you don’t ever want to forget
a full 3 pages of Stream of Consciousness writing, like what Julia Cameron taught in The Artist’s Way
When you finish the journal, set it aside for later, or go back right away and fill in the blank pages with your commentary on your own journaling. Won’t you surprise yourself with how much or little your feelings change on the matter?
