Shapes of Gathering

Creating through playing tabletop role playing games

“Gather around,” I said to the class. Everyone assembled in an awkward blobbed shape. Laughing I restated the command, “let’s gather around in a circle.”

I like shapes, especially circles. When folks gather around a table, or campfire, I think that it is a big deal to make sure it looks like a circle.

Energy flows where the body goes

So when we gather in a circle, we perfectly dividing the attention, a precious resource, amongst each other. This model works really well when you are doing creative work in groups, because the energy can flow uninhibited around without a checkpoint of hierarchy.

There are plenty of spaces for squares and triangle, involving more power on one side. But anyway, I still think circles are my favorite shape for creative folks to gather.

One of the joys of work for Sojourners Awake is that I get to create with the students. We pay for creative work, for art, for ideas written on paper. We even get to hire game masters to lead the storytelling games at our events and retreats!

Jackson, one of my oldest students and now a game master is FULL of ideas. I like to give him credit for most of the work on the website, since he rarely stops his brainpower to gather up credit for himself. He’s probably on to the next big idea by now. :)

Casey, a newer student of ours, has found her niche in providing hand drawn artwork. She’s really opened my eyes to realize all of the natural home grown talent we have in house!

John, one of our newer gamemasters, incepted an idea about a magic user in a fantasy world that draws geometric shapes and symbols in order to engineer magical effects in the material world. Circle magic, you say? Sign me up!
